Q & A Five

Q: What are the latest trends from fashion week?
A: I'm honored that people even ask me this question. While I wasn't
in attendance at NYFW this season, I was tuning in closely to see
what trends would emerge (my go to for runway shots is
I was checking daily, reading the reviews, pouring over the coverage,
trolling instagram, etc. The climate of the fashion industry is definitely
changing in the current digital age. Some designers opted out of shows
all together, while some that previously did shows scaled down to
intimate presentations. Long story short, change is in the air. I'm curious
to see where it leads us.
In terms of trends, there's good news. In the midst of all the change,
these things remain: white boots, pops of red and pink, chunky/
oversized sweaters, slip dresses, and an overall nod to the 80s and
90s. These things have been on the scene since last fall, so there won't
be a huge turnover for spring and fall of this year. The good news in
that is that if you've invested in said pieces already, you can still wear
them throughout the year. A sigh of relief.
While pink and red weren't taking over the runways, there were hints
of one or the other in almost every new collection. That chunky red
sweater you had to have last fall? Keep it. Wear it with a relaxed
silky skirt this year. Throw on a pair of white boots and you've
got the fall look nailed.
Those white boots that every blogger is still wearing? You might
consider snagging a pair. They were shown in the form of a mule
for spring and a full fledged bootie for fall. While I'm hesitant to
jump on board with this one, maybe a lower price point option
will do the trick. Trendy but they didn't break the bank. I'm considering
the following options:
In terms of patterns, there were nods to polka dots (both small
and oversized), gingham and the androgynous plaids seen in menswear
and suiting. The return of gingham is something we're already seeing
for spring, so pick up pieces you can wear now that will take you through
the next season. The menswear inspired plaids are also already showing up
on bloggers as we speak and will remain throughout the year. Think
oversized, relaxed blazers in a black and white check, long coats with
menswear detailing, the 90s power suit... you get the idea. Basically,
everything we shied away from in the early 2000s is making a comeback.
The androgynous patterns are great for now, like these pieces:

Gone are the days of skinny jeans and pencil pants. It's all about wide-leg
trousers, relaxed boyfriend jeans, and high-waisted pants.
Overall, I'd say we have something to look forward to. The feel of fashion
week was a return to elegance, but in a relaxed way. A refined form
of casual. Noticeably absent? Logos.

The Color Red

With this warm hue showing up on every major blogger during NYFW, designers and stores are taking note. Red is everywhere for fall. It is the color of the season. We will cover additional ways to wear red throughout the week, but let's start with a yummy oversized sweater. Wear it with a pair of updated jeans and a white ankle boot (more on this later... yes, they are a thing). I'm currently searching the web for more red pieces to add to my closet. For now, this sweater is a great place to start.

September 08, 2017

When I was working on the fall collection, I kept being drawn to an image of a trendy girl in front of the Eiffel Tower because, let's be serious, Paris is the ultimate source of inspiration. I was also pulling inspiration from the current fall trends and what the influencers are wearing (Gucci t-shirts, booties with cropped jeans, small structured bags, etc). This is the result and I have to say, I'm obsessed. I want to be her.
You can find her on notecards right now with more products to be revealed

When I saw this photo of Jourdan Dunn in Michael Kors, I saw an illustration waiting to happen. Love the asymmetrical cut of the sweater with the slouchy trousers. All in all, I'd give it a 10. A perfect look for the current transitional weather.

Queen of Hearts

NYFW kind of came and went before my eyes. I was lightly paying attention but still have yet to pour through the images for next season. One that caught my eye was J.Crew, this look specifically. They always seem to capture the overall trends for the next season, so it's kind of a one-stop destination for inspiration. Off the shoulder: still a thing. A flirty and feminine skirt: always a do. Pair all of the above with a strappy shoe in a fun color and you get this...

Sister Sister

When bloggers descend upon New York for Fashion Week, my eyes are glued to instagram for the street style shots. Rachel Parcell and Emily Jackson stepped out in coordinating long coats with jeans and made a true statement. I couldn't wait to put pen to paper to bring their looks to live in the BFP voice.

5 for Fall: Mini Structured Bags

If there's a bag trend I'm a fan of, it's the small but structured cross body.
It's literal fashion meets function at it's finest. It forces you to declutter,
think through what you're carrying and only pack the essentials (something
I struggle with when larger totes are the bags of the season). I've got my eye
this new shape from J.Crew but I can't figure out if I'm wanting something
square or rounded. What are some of your favorites?

5 for Fall: Bell Sleeves

One thing that will give you major 60's and 70's vibes is the reemergence
of bell sleeves for fall. They're everywhere! And, they're going to still be everywhere come Spring 2017. Invest now. Thank me later. Follow my September Issue '16 board for more styling tips!

5 for Fall: Sneakers and Slides

You saw the first taste of slides yesterday, but I'm telling you, every top blogger
and tastemaker is wearing them (specifically this Gucci version). They might not be for everyone, but they're certainly making waves in the fashion world. If you just can't even, you're in luck. Sneakers are single-handedly one of the biggest trends for fall and I couldn't be happier. Your feet will thank you! My collection continues to grow as I'm fully endorsing this one. Comfort meets fashion, I'm such a fan! Here's the great news: these are being shown on spring runways with short, flirty dresses. They're not going anywhere, so you can feel good about investing in a few options. Go ahead and pick up a new berry lip color while you're out shopping.

If I could go on and on about what's big for Fall, wide-leg pants would
certainly be on the list. They're even bigger for Spring, so it's another
investment to feel great about! Can we talk about comfort? Yes, please.

5 for Fall: Cropped Flares

Yesterday we covered the must-have jacket (the bomber jacket). Today, we're dissecting denim. There have been movements away from the tight, constricting skinny jeans to more relaxed silhouettes with an increased focus on distressing. This season, it's all about a cropped flare. Yes, you're reading that correctly, a cropped flare. Think Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in the 90s, Jackie O in the 70s. When paired with a slim bodysuit and flat slides, you've nailed the 90s vibe.
She's wearing the jeans everyone is talking about with the shoes all the bloggers
and tastemakers are raving about (more on those tomorrow) and the trend
everyone isn't quite sure about (the bodysuit). Here's the good news: they are sticking around for spring, so you're guaranteed another season of wear out of them.

5 for Fall: Bomber Jackets

With each new season comes a new batch of trends, a new set of "it" girls, and new must-haves that all the bloggers will be wearing during NYFW. With the September issues already on newsstands, it's time to break down the trends. We've combed through loads of social media feeds and lengthy lists of trends to narrow it down to 5 absolute must-haves. When worn in combination, the trends for Fall will give you a major case of nostalgia. It has major 90s vibes with a touch of 70s. One of my favorite updates for the new season is a fresh jacket in the form of a bomber jacket. You can't go wrong. Dress it down with a pair of jeans and your favorite tee, tie it around your waist for major cool points or drape it over your shoulders. There are a plethora of options available at all price points, so if you're hesitant about diving in head first, try places like Forever 21, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and Zara for this one.

Lady Liberty

What's your first stop in NYC? Mine is always one of the major landmarks.
No matter how many times I've visited or how many months I lived there, I
still love paying a visit to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times
Square, Battery Park, the World Trade Center and the like. They're classics that I never tire of seeing. These two headed straight downtown to the waterfront for a better view of Lady Liberty. They're also sporting the biggest trends for fall: sneakers, bomber jackets, small structured bags, etc. (more on that next week).
Hint hint: this is your first sneak peak of the 2017 planner. These two are (for
obvious reasons) our September girls! The planner launches next week, so stay

NYFW 2016

Today is the official kick-off to NYFW! While I'll be watching from the sidelines this season, I can't wait to see what the street style stars and  tastemakers are wearing, what the designers are showing, and most importantly, what the next set of trends will be. Join me as we venture head-first into the frenzied world of
Fashion Week! Next stop, NYC...

June 28, 2016

I love this effortless look by Thamarr of Musings of a Curvy Lady. I had the privilege of meeting her at a NYFW event last September, and she's an absolute doll in person, too.  Black & white gingham paired with straw accessories equals the perfect summer look.

Nashville Symphony Fashion Show

Counting down the hours to tonight's show with Carolina Herrera, yes, THE Carolina Herrera. The Nashville Symphony Fashion Show is one of my favorite events of the year. With a different designer each year, it's an elegant showcase of Spring's finest fashion in the most beautiful setting. Tonight should be no exception. I cannot wait to see Mrs. Herrera's collection in person.

Fashion Week is here (or has been here for a few days) and it's flying by. I haven't even had a chance to pour over the images from the latest collections to pick out my favorite emerging trends. Stay tuned... hopefully I'll find time over the next week to see what's going to be huge for Fall 2016. In the meantime, I teamed up with blogger Yael Steren to showcase her first look of NYFW.

Giambattista Valli Couture Spring '16

With NYFW just around the corner, it's time to kick off the most fashionable month with a preview of the Couture shows. Giambattista Valli is always drool-worthy... floral details, flowy silhouettes, and feminine embellishments - it's going to be a girly spring!
